Bark Scorpions
Southern Utah's most-feared pest. Nocturnal, glow blue-green under UV light, and pack a painful sting. Common in rocky landscaping, block walls, and garages.
Signs of infestation
- Sightings at night, especially near patios and pool decks
- Bark scorpion in the garage or bathtub
- Blue-green glow under a UV blacklight
How we treat it
Perimeter barrier plus granular treatment to rock and gravel, and a UV inspection. Treat their food source (roaches, crickets, spiders) so scorpions have nothing to hunt.
Black Widows
Shiny black spider with a red hourglass. Loves block walls, meter boxes, patio furniture, and cluttered garages. Their bite is a medical concern.
Signs of infestation
- Messy, chaotic web (not a neat wheel)
- Egg sacs — off-white and papery
- Sightings under patio furniture or in the garage
How we treat it
Direct-contact treatment to webs and hiding spots, plus a residual perimeter application to prevent re-infestation.
Ants
The most common pest call in Washington County. Southern Utah gets everything from tiny sugar ants to aggressive harvester ants in the yard.
Signs of infestation
- Trails across counters or baseboards
- Small piles of dirt near cracks or driveways
- Winged swarmers near windows in spring
How we treat it
Non-repellent bait and residual perimeter treatment so foragers carry it back to the colony. We identify the species first — different ants need different products.
Cockroaches
German and American roaches thrive in Southern Utah kitchens, garages, and irrigation boxes. Fast breeders — never a DIY job once established.
Signs of infestation
- Roach sightings at night
- Small dark droppings that look like coffee grounds
- Musty odor in cabinets or under sinks
How we treat it
Targeted gel bait in harborage areas plus insect growth regulator to break the breeding cycle. Follow-up visit two weeks later to catch newly hatched nymphs.
Mice
House mice slip through gaps the size of a dime. Common in garages, pantries, and any home backing up to open desert.
Signs of infestation
- Droppings in drawers or along baseboards
- Chewed food packaging or wiring
- Scratching sounds in walls or ceilings
How we treat it
Full inspection to find entry points, exclusion (sealing gaps), and interior/exterior trapping. We do NOT scatter rodenticide where pets can reach it.
Wasps & Hornets
Paper wasps and yellowjackets nest under eaves, in playhouses, and inside irrigation boxes across St. George. Aggressive when disturbed.
Signs of infestation
- Papery nests under eaves or in sheds
- Wasps entering a small hole in siding
- Increased activity around trash cans or hummingbird feeders
How we treat it
Direct nest treatment (usually in the evening for safety), removal of the nest, and residual application to prevent rebuilds in the same spot.
Crickets
Field crickets swarm in late summer and love hiding in garages and window wells. They also feed scorpions — a big deal in Washington County.
Signs of infestation
- Loud nighttime chirping around the house
- Crickets in the garage, under doormats, or in window wells
- Chewed fabric or paper in stored items
How we treat it
Exterior granular treatment on lawns and rock, perimeter liquid barrier, and door-seal check. Reducing crickets also reduces the scorpion food supply.
